Facial Recognition

This series of abstract portraits explores how we are hard-wired to recognize faces through pattern and perception. Using Gestalt-based nets, dots, and shifts in color value, the work investigates the moment when abstract forms become legible as faces.

I also take on a limited number of commissioned portraits each year, applying this same process to a person you choose rather than one from my own catalog. Working from a photograph or a sitting, each commission is a translation of someone's actual likeness into this pattern language, not a straightforward reproduction of it.
